A few years ago when I first started getting serious about finding full-coverage foundation makeup to cover the vitiligo and melasma on my face, I thought Dermablend cover creme was my only option. I would sample it but I couldn't get over the thickness and the unscented scent.
I did lots of researched and tried Cover FX total cover cream foundation instead. It was good at the time - and I highly recommend this to everyone looking for extreme full coverage. I recommend this often to other shoppers in Sephora when they asks a salesperson for Dermablend to no avail.
Update: I've found an even better foundation to cover my melasma and an awesome melasma treatment!
What's Great about Cover FX Total Cover Cream Foundation:
- It lasts all day.
- Very strong, opaque coverage.
- Can be applied well with brushes, sponges or hands.
- I often use Sephora Pro Full Coverage Airbrush Brush #53, Sephora Pro Full Coverage Airbrush Brush #56 and Stila One Step Complexion Brush # 33 to apply.
- It's paraben-free, mineral oil free, and talc free.
- Dermablend Cover Creme has mineral oil and talc.
- How gross is mineral oil? Depends on who you ask. At the very least it comes from petroleum, so I would suggest avoiding it where you can.
- No sulfates or phthalates.
- It doesn't have any added scents.
- SPF 30
Why it's not my go-to foundation for melasma and vitiligo anymore:
- It takes a lot of work and elbow-grease to apply and blend.
- It's more thick than I prefer and doesn't feel breathable.
- It has a strong, chemical-ly, "unscented scent". Likely due to the sunscreen. (may not bother most people)
- Difficult to match to my skintone as my skin is often between shades and I mix foundations.
- One of the sunscreen ingredients is octisalate. (not the greatest Skindeep rating)
- It's doesn't have a matte finish, which I prefer. A great setting powder or setting spray is needed.
